Marie Luise Fleisser

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 10 months ago
In 1962 Marie Luise Fleisser writes her key-story “Die Avantgarde” in Ingolstadt, where she was born and to where she returned. It is the processing of her connection with, her dependence from Bert Brecht. She didn’t publish for 30 years. Brecht is dead since six years.

1932 she returned from Berlin to Ingolstadt, remorseful, a paria. She marries the commercant in tobacco Beppo Haindl to who she already was engaged in the twenties. He lives until 1958.

“It was not clear if she was his colleague, friend, lover or wife. ‘That’s my wife’, the disputed poet would say in the beginning, but what did it mean with his wear of women? He took the liberties of a genius and she was all taken by the genius. Cilly Ostermeier would have given everything for it, she didn’t care...”

Brecht’s messages and signals are permeating like x-rays all layers of ratio and ego and getting straight to the female instincts where they transform into longing. (Ursula März)

"She wanted to write too."

But a writer on same level with him was intolerable.

“One has to be actress, then he would be able to express himself through the woman, that was the true supplement for a man, that!s what he needed. He could see himself through her body. If one did only write one would be gone soon. He could do it himself.”

“The poet” = Brecht
“The jew” = Feuchtwanger
“Polly” = Helene Weigel
“Cilly Ostermeier” = herself

About her lecture of Brecht:
“I read his early masterpiece ‘Baal’ in my own room, my heart was beating, and when I saw it on stage I surrendered, For hours I was walking through the rainy streets of october and I knew: from this poet I would never recover...”

In the early summer of 1924 they met for the first time in Feuchtwanger’s flat and at once she became addicted to him
Brecht is aware of her talent and promotes her..."Love was just an add....he merely saw the talent.”

Her play “Fegefeuer in Ingolstadt” (she wanted to call it “Fusswaschung”) is given with success in Berlin.
Brecht proposes the plot to a new one, "Die Pioniere von Ingolstadt" she’s writing reluctantly, he changes it until the last minute, putting more sexuality, she leaves. It makes scandal. One week later Brecht gives a message that she can take her letters back. The separation brakes her heart.
