Elmyr de Hory

He lived under much names: Baron Elmyr de Houry, Elmyr Herzog, Louis Cassou, Baron Elmyr Hoffman, Josef Dory, E.Raynal, Joseph Dory-Boutin.....

Born in Hungary, travelling much, retiring to his villa on the island of Ibiza, he was one of the best counterfeiters in his time, and a very special on. For about ten years he studied the technique of Jan Vermeer van Delft, the mix of his colours, his canvases etc. and he did not only paint doublets of existing originals but painted "new" Vermeers.

Born in Budapest in 1905 from a rich family he went to be a student of Fernand Leger in Paris. After the war in 1945 he found himself poor and starving, but he discovered, that one drawing of "Picasso" brought a fortune and he began to produce fake sketches and paintings.

From 1958 on Fernand Legros and RĂ©al Lessard sold his products to collectors in the whole world, but some years later a rich American, Algur Hurtle Meadows, took them all three to court. He bought about 44 "Modigliani", "Dufy", "Derain" and "Picasso"-paintings from them.

Hory committed suicide in 1976. Are we sure that he did not fake his own death?

Cliffort Irving and Roger Peyrefitte wrote biographies of him
