Gala, Elena Dimitrovna Diakonova, born in Russia, daughter of a muscovite functionary; possessed a great sensitivity for art and distinct physical and intellectual attractiveness. She was part of the surrealist group, many of which were in love with her.

 

 

Gala was born Elena Dmitrievna Diakonova in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia, to a family of intellectuals. Among her childhood friends was the poet Marina Tsvetaeva. As a young woman, living in Moscow, she graduated as a school-teacher in 1915.

Most people know her as the wife and companion of Salvador Dali, but not all of them are aware, that she first married Paul Eluard.
